Grand Trunk Recalls Portable Parachute Hammocks

In cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC), Travel Hammock Inc., dba Grand Trunk, of Skokie, Ill. is recalling 2500 single and double “Parachute” hammocks that were sold from July 2008 through June 2009. recalled Grand Trunk Hammock It seems the hammocks’ support hooks can fail, causing an occupant to fall and become injured. Nine cases of hook failure have been reported so far.

Manufactured in Indonesia, the recalled hammocks were sold in single and double versions and packaged in a nylon sack. The Grand Trunk logo is printed on the sack. The following models and colors are included in the recall: SH-01 (Single Olive/Khaki), SH-02 (Single Blue/Navy Blue), SH-06 (Single Royal/Khaki), DH-01 (Double Olive/Khaki), DH-02 (Double Lt. Blue/Yellow), DH-03(Double Navy/Silver), DH-04 (Double Navy/Red). The model number can be located on the product’s hang tag.

If you bought one of these hammocks, stop using it immediately and call Grand Trunk toll-free at (877) 365-2965 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday for a free repair kit. Visit the firm’s Web site at www.grandtrunkgoods.com for more information.

Use a Hammock To Watch Perseid Meteor Shower

Tonight’s a great night to use the hammock. In case you haven’t heard, the spectacular annual sky show known as the Perseid meteor shower is in full force tonight. In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12; but you can catch these shooting stars all this week. Some viewing tips:

The best location is far from city and suburban lights. Ideally, find a structure, mountain or tree to block the moon. Then scan as much of the sky as possible. The meteors can appear anywhere, heading in any direction. If you trace their paths backward, they’ll all point to the constellation Perseus.

For your comfort, use a hammock or lounge chair to watch the show since you’ll be looking up for extended periods of time. August is such a great time of year to relax and hang out. The Perseids are a super reason to enjoy a calm summer evening lounging in your outdoor hammock under the sky. Go ahead, make a wish on a star!

Outdoor hammocks never went out of style in my book…but I think the author of this news story was taking a little poetic license in the title. A nice article in the DailyJournal.com (NJ, USA) about the popularity of backyard hammocks. People are looking for low-cost ways to beat stress without going on pricey trips or overpriced movie outings. There’s no better way to relax and forget about life’s struggles for a moment or three than swinging outdoors in a hammock. Catch The “Wave”…Hammock

Every now and then it’s interesting to see what ideas designers have when they’re taking fresh looks at everyday things…like hammocks. This is a concept called the Wave Hammock, and it was created by Swedish designers Erik Nyberg and Gustav Ström for Belgian outdoor furniture manufacturer Royal Botania. With its sweeping arc of a canopy, it looks like a modern sculpture.

The Wave Hammock

According to the designers, the Wave should “convey the feeling of lying underneath the canopy of a tree, surrounded by a defined, natural space, forming both a sculpture and an inviting and luxurious outdoor furniture.” The canopy fabric is perforated and semi-transparent, yet is said to block 86% of the sun’s rays. Frame is polished stainless steel. An interesting design! I cannot find a price for the Wave Hammock, so take your best guess….
