Do NOT Allow Children To Play On Or Around Hammocks

I just saw this sad story today from Indiana (USA)…an 8 year old who died of strangulation after becoming tangled in a homemade hammock while playing with his brothers and a friend. Hammocks are wonderful fun for adults and, with proper adult supervision, children. But hammocks are dangerous for young children to play around or on because kids can all too easily fall or become trapped in the hammock and strangle themselves. I am not a advocate of toy hammocks (small hammocks used for toy storage in a child’s room) for this very reason. Children are just too tempted by the hanging hammock not to try to swing from it, and the results can be fatal. My heart goes out to the family. This is a terrible tragedy, especially just before Christmas. I cannot say it enough - please do not allow children to play around or on any hammock.

Young Children and Toy Hammocks Can Be A Deadly Combo

I’ve been reading a tragic story from the UK about a young child, four years old, who accidentally hanged herself from a toy hammock in her room while playing and died.  It seems that she may have been imitating the actions of a Nickelodeon TV cartoon character.

The hammock in this incident was used to store toys in the child’s room.  The child used a stool to reach the toy hammock and was swinging on it using her headband.  I cannot imagine the horror the parents must have felt on discovering their daughter dead, and my heart goes out to them.

I am blogging this story because I feel it’s important for parents to know that toy hammocks and other hanging objects such as drapery, window blind and light cords; or curtain ties are dangerous to babies, toddlers and small children because of the threat of entanglement and strangulation.  One should never leave children playing unsupervised around any hammock.  Note again: the girl used a stool to reach up to the toy hammock, so hanging it high made no difference. Curious children will always find a way. Please, if you have small children, check their rooms now, today, for these tempting hazards and remove them.  It is sadly too late for little Paige Brown; but perhaps knowledge of her story can save others.
