Hammock Tents: The Most Comfortable Camping Tent
April 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedHammock camping is a style of camping where the campers sleep in hammocks off the ground. Hammock tents are the ideal shelter for these environmentally sensitive campers who desire sleeping comfort without damaging nature’s beauty.
What’s Different About a Hammock Tent?
Many if not most campers protect themselves from the elements overnight by putting up a tent and using a sleeping bag inside it. A hammock tent is just a conventional hammock, sans spreader bars, suspended between two supports such as trees, and shielded with a protective canopy or tarp for sleeping and shelter similar to a conventional camping tent. Hammock tents that you purchase are made so that the protective covers are part of the hammock. Many hammock tents have an entry system that can be closed using a zipper, Velcro or other closure system.
Hammock Tents Are Eco-Friendly
Hammock tents have many benefits. Hammock campers firmly believe that using hammocks doesn’t mar or harm the environment like a traditional campsite. Sleeping in a hammock tent eliminates trying to sleep on hard or otherwise rocky ground. Indeed, these hammocks enable you to set up camp where many conventional camping tents could never be placed. Many are available with mosquito netting, inner pockets for storage, and other nifty features. Once you try a hammock tent and experience the renowned restful comfort of a hammock while camping, you may give up your conventional tent and sleeping bag altogether.

If you go hiking and camping, there’s no reason not to take a camping hammock with you.
There are lightweight camping hammocks designed to pack and store easily. Now you can make your backpacking trip even more relaxing by bringing a hammock along.
A camping hammock is similar to a regular hammock in basic design. Most don’t come with hammock stands, which contributes to their portability; but there are a few that do. You can use them for relaxing or sleeping. A camping hammock has got to be the ultimate for sleeping in the outdoors.
If you are interested in camping hammocks, there are some safety precautions that you should take. First of all, be sure that the hammock you choose is well made. If it’s poor quality construction, you certainly won’t enjoy relaxing or sleeping in it. And you sure don’t want it to break and fall with you….
Especially if you’re going backpacking in rough terrain, a nylon material is best for durability and moisture resistance. A rain cover for your hammock can be handy if you will be sleeping in the elements. And mosquito netting, for me at least, is a must! Yes, there are hammocks available with these options. Light weight is also important; you don’t want to be overburdened while hiking. You might consider an ultralight hammock or hike hammock for your pack. For the ultimate in comfort, try a hammock tent.
Next, be aware of your campsite’s setting and resources. A hammock is usually meant to be suspended between two supports. If you don’t travel with a portable hammock stand, be sure that you will have available two sturdy trees or other supports in close proximity to hang the hammock.
Suspend the camping hammock high enough off of the ground to avoid damage to the material and/or injury to you. Be sure that you secure the hammock to the trees tightly. Your camping hammock should come with directions as well as a diagram that will allow you to properly complete the installation. You may want to use hammock tree straps to minimize damage to trees when hanging the camping hammock.
